  1. Bureau of Indian standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986) and framing of Rules / Regulations under there.
  2. Constitution of Bureau of Indian Standards for a two year term by nominating / appointing members representing various interests/ categories as laid down in section 3 of BIS Act, 1986.
  3. Appointment of Director-General of Bureau of Indian Standards.
  4. Laying of Authenticated copies of Notifications issued under the BIS Act before the Parliament.
  5. Appeals preferred by aggrieved licenses of the Bureau against their decisions under Section 16 of BIS Act, 1986.
  6. Introduction of Compulsory Certificate Marking in respect  of any item of mass consumption of affecting public health and safety in consultation with BIS/other concerned Ministry/ Department of the Central Government.
  7. Finanlising Budget Estimates / Revised Estimates of the Bureau  in consultation with I.F. Division.
  8. Release of Plan/Non-Plan Grants-in-aid to the Bureau.
  9. Grant of Customs Duty Exemption Certificate to the Bureau  for import of equipments/apparatus/spare parts for use in R & D activities.
  10. Coordination with Central Ministries/State Governments/Union Territories regarding enforcement of Provisions contained in various Quality Control Orders.
  11. Maintaining coordination between Central Ministries and BIS  regarding implementation of Indian Standards.
  12. All references relating to administrative matters of BIS such as:
    1. Appointments to the posts in the BIS carrying  a scale of pay maximum of which exceeds Rs.4500/-p.m.
    2. Creation of posts in BIS.
    3. Appeals made for second medical examination by candidates selected for the post of Assistant Director in BIS
    4. Agreements between BIS and other Standards bodies in other countries.
    5. Delegations for attending the meeting of ISO and IEC etc. abroad.
    6. Assignments of the BIS officers under UNIDO etc.
    7. Other matters as are referred by BIS to this  Deptt. for advice/clarification.
    8. Consideration and disposal of representations addressed by officers of BIS against communication of adverse remarks in their Confidential Reports reviewed by Director-General, BIS.
  13. Furnishing of para-wise replies to Director of Audit  in respect of Inspection Reports on the accounts of BIS/accounts of this Section.
  14. Laying of Annual Report of the BIS before Parliament.
  15. Parliament Questions relating to BIS.
  16. Furnishing of O&M Returns in respect of BIS to P&C Section /O&M Section /IF Division of Department of Consumer Affairs
